About us

Welcome, Bienvenue, Willkommen, Benvenuti, Welkom!

Maidenhead Women’s Group for European Friendship (MWGEF) is a women’s friendship group, based in Maidenhead, with established friendship & cultural links with sister groups in Europe. St Cloud in France; Bad Godesberg in Germany; Frascati in Italy; Kortrijk in Belgium & Salzburg in Austria.

The Group was established in 1965 with Greta Winton as its first President. The purpose of the group is to foster friendship between our members drawn from the Maidenhead area as well as friendships and cultural exchanges with our sister groups in Europe.

As the name suggests, the group is for women only but it is inclusive, non-partisan and non-sectarian; anyone with a desire for friendship and a wish to extend her knowledge of all and any aspects of Europe is welcome to join. There is no pre-requisite to have any knowledge of foreign languages.

We meet regularly at the United Reform Church, West St, Maidenhead every second Wednesday of the month at 10.30 am when we have guest speakers on mainly European topics and there is an opportunity to chat over a cup of tea or coffee.

In addition, other social and cultural events are organised by the Committee for our members during the year but our absolute priority each year is our programme of exchange visits with our sister groups in Europe, both visiting and hosting on an annual basis.

We also have several successful special interest subgroups which cover topics such as languages, literature & music. These small subgroups, accessible to MWGEF members only, meeting at regular intervals in members’ homes.

New members are always most welcome. Membership is by annual subscription.
